  1. 1917- . Zimbabwean politician, president of
  2. ZAPU (Zimbabwe African People's Union) from
  3. 1961 and a leader of the black nationalist
  4. movement against the white Rhodesian regime.
  5. He was a member of Robert Mugabe's cabinet in
  6. 1980-82 and from 1987. After completing his
  7. education in South Africa, Joshua Nkomo
  8. became a welfare officer on Rhodesian
  9. Railways and later organizing secretary of
  10. the Rhodesian African Railway Workers' Union.
  11. He entered politics 1950 and rose to become
  12. president of ZAPU. He was soon arrested, with
  13. other black African politicians, and was in
  14. detention during 1963-74. After his release
  15. he joined forces with Robert Mugabe as a
  16. joint leader of the Patriotic Front 1976,
  17. opposing the white-dominated regime of Ian
  18. Smith. Nkomo took part in the Lancaster House
  19. Conference, which led to Rhodesia's
  20. independence as the new state of Zimbabwe,
  21. and became a cabinet minister and vice
  22. president.
